In Life in the Blender, Sandi Patty relates her experiences as a mom, stepparent, and adoptive mother.  This is really written for adults who have established blended families or those who are contemplating doing so.  However, the information is applicable for almost any family and the most refreshing thing about this book is that it includes the many mistakes they made.  As the author says, we found out about those parts by asking the kids.  This book is about a journey and as she says, What matters to God is the journey, not just the arrival at the goal.  Gods concern is not that weve arrived but that we continue to travel in the right direction.  For His grace both-empowers-our obedience and forgives our failures.

This book can be found in the church library.

               Pastoral Ponderings . . .

I received an early Fathers Day card from my daughter Kristin this week.  It was incredibly sweet and very endearing to dear ole dad.  As I read the words she wrote, tears came to my eyes (Ive noticed this is happening with much more frequency these days).  She reminded me that though she is growing up, she would always be my daughter (Oh no, here they come again).

But I realized again just how quickly time goes by.  I look back over my life with my children and see things I wish I would have done better.  I feel regret in the busyness of work, the exhaustion of that busyness, and the things that just got by me.

Here my daughter is a beautiful young woman, about to graduate from college.  My son is a senior now in high school.  And I cannot figure out where the time went!  Did I sleep through about 10 years or so?  Was I conscience?  Was I alert?  I remember Kristin starting school.  Then theres a blur.  Now shes 22.

I dont even remember Ryan starting school.  To me, hes still running around in a sagging diaper, trying to pull the Christmas tree over.  Oh Lord, where did the years go?

I look at Pam.  She still looks the same as she did when we married.  Me?  Well, I look in the mirror and see my dad.  When did that happen?

I guess it does no good to beat yourself up.  I hope and pray Pam and I did enough right things at the right times.  I hope they really did learn that God, in His great love, really did rescue me from a different lifestyle.  I hope that even though there were times Im sure I didnt show it enough, that I loved my family fiercely.  Still do.  Probably more so than ever.  I hope both my kids know that they can come to me ANYTIME, ANY DAY.

I guess my prayer is, Father God, with so much time gone, with so many opportunities passed, please always let my kids know that I love them so much.  Please help them to have learned that You can be the strength, source, and joy of their lives.  God please keep Your hand upon them, guide them, help them, walk with them every step of their lives.  Keep close to them.  Really close.  Sovereignly cause them to make right choices.  Move heaven and earth to keep their hearts tender toward You, trusting You, leaning on Your love and purpose for their lives.  And please God, let them remember something about You that they saw in me.
